PEGs: What They Are and How They Work

While it may not have the same name recognition as ingredients like parabens or sulfates, this polymer is a growing cause of concern for some people. The post PEGs: What They Are and How They Work appeared first on Glow Recipe.

Checking In: The Summer of Camping (Part II), and a Couple Things to Try on Your Next Camping Trip

OK, I guess I’m getting better at “mom-ming while camping” because instead of needing two weeks to recover from the trip, it only took two days, ha ha ha! Ya know, when I envisioned the “Summer of Camping” in my mind, I thought we’d be going, like, every week or every other week this summer, but now I’m thinking maybe once a month? Don’t get me wrong — it’s fun! I love it. It’s just a lot of work. The trip we just took to Collins Lake was a ton of fun. The drive is a long one if you’re coming from the Bay Area (about two and a half hours), but once we got there, wow! Our campsite was right next to the lake, and the water was SUPER warm — like bath temperature warm! Whenever I wanted to cool off, all I had to do was hobble down a hill and over some rocks for a minute, and then I’d jump right in. It was glorious! And being the water baby that I am, I went swimming quite a few times, although you know what I realized? Lake swimming is no joke, dude. When you don’t have salt water to keep you afloat, you gotta work that much harder. Before and After: Urban Decay Lash Freak Mascara

Ooh! Urban Decay just launched a new long-wearing mascara with a freaky-looking wand for $25. It’s designed, first and foremost, to increase volume, especially at the roots, and has a crazy-looking wand with three distinct surfaces! If you like bold lash looks and a cruelty-free formula that doesn’t smudge or smear, check it out. How does it it work? On one side of the brush there’s a row of asymmetrical teeth that really maximizes the amount of product the brush deposits on your lashes. The brush tip has a series of spikes to separate and define individual hairs, too. The last side — the smooth, curved part of the brush — is designed to press up against the roots for added lift. What does two coats look like? On my lashes, which naturally point downward and struggle to hold a curl, Lash Freak adds noticeably dramatic thickness at the base of my lashes, and you couldn’t miss it from a mile away! Two coats are enough for thick and lush lashes, but here’s the thing: from up close, the individual lashes look lumpy and bumpy. The curl from my lash curler also relaxes quite bit, so the coated lashes end up reaching out rather than curling up… I like the color though. FOTD: Unintentionally ’80s Copper and Purple

I blame all of the talk about Duran Duran in the Monday Poll comments on this makeup. I was going for colorful and modern with copper and plum lids, but I think I may have ended up unintentionally recreating the ’80s instead. WHOOPS! 🤭 (While we’re at it, would someone please pass me a pair of big-@ss shoulder pads and a bottle Aqua Net, STAT?) That’s the Urban Decay Naked Ultraviolet Palette on my lids again, by the way. Marcia asked in the comments last week what I think of it, and ya know…I have mixed feelings. The purples are easy to blend, and they’re just different enough to be able to create a variety of violet looks with them, which is cool! As for the powder blue highlight shade (Lucid)? It’s surprisingly versatile (and beautiful) as an inner corner highlighter and to mix with other purples, but the warm, orange and copper tones are kind of a challenge to work with. I totally get that UD was going for a purposeful clash with the orange and purple, but they’re a little too disjointed to put the two against each other. When Was the Last Time You Dyed Your Hair?

Ah, let me tell you about the life of a lady with grown-out roots! Hair dye is a CONSTANT topic of conversation between me and my neighbors, it seems, because when I run into my buddies who live nearby, we’re always talking about the last time we went to the salon to touch up roots. It’s the newest way to make polite conversation between women, ha ha ha! For me, it’s been a minute since my hair was dyed. Fall of 2018 was the last time. That’s when I started this little experiment of growing out my grays. How much you can see them depends on how I part my hair and the lighting, and although I’ve been told it looks nice, I’m still keeping the door open again to color my hair in the future ’cause I like to switch things up every once in a while (although the pandemic has prevented that from happening, so it probably won’t be for a long time!). How about you? When was the last time you dyed your hair? Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, Karen Continue reading "When Was the Last Time You Dyed Your Hair?" on Makeup and Beauty Blog.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 636

So…what is the Monday Poll? Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. 🌻 1. Banana or coconut? Coconut. 2. Gimme the deets on your last beauty purchase! I restocked the drugstore hair/body things I was running low on, namely Neutrogena clarifying shampoo, Pantene Rose Water shampoo and conditioner, and Dove Body Soap. 3. When you’re eating bite-sized foods like bacon-wrapped shrimp hors d’oeuvres or mini brownies, do you take dainty nibbles, or do you shove the whole thing into your mouth? Dainty nibbles when there are other people around (what’s that even like any more, LOL?!), but if it’s just me, myself and I…and Netflix, then I shove the whole thing! 4. Have you had “maskne” before (it’s when you break out because of your mask, by the way!)? I think I have. I got a few little pimples just underneath my nostrils and around my mouth earlier in the summer, but that was probably mainly because I slacking on my zit lotion. Ideas for children doing school work from home

With “ school “ starting back Monday, I thought I would put together a few ideas to help parents work through while they are supervising the work set by teachers ” . Hopefully this will help a few of you out  but keep in mind there is only so much you can do. Remember teachers are still teaching. You are not replacing the teacher, you are helping supervise the work that had already been prepared for your children. Do not feel that you have to add more in. Now that the initial panic of schools closing is gone, schools will have had some time to put together a plan of work […] The post Ideas for children doing school work from home appeared first on The Beautiful Truth.

bareMineral barePro Liquid foundation

BareMinerals is a brand I really fell for in the last year. I had always avoided trying it, as I just chalked it down as a “mineral makeup” and in my eyes, I always thought mineral meant sub standard. How wrong I was! Mineral makeup, or at least what I have tried , is just as good if not better in some cases, than regular makeup. Having tried the Original BareMinerals powder foundation and liking how it wore, I got a sample of the Bare pro liquid foundation and went on to buy a bottle for myself. I have worn it for about 5 months now, so thought it was […] The post bareMineral barePro Liquid foundation appeared first on The Beautiful Truth.

The Best and Worst Maternity tights

Anyone who has been pregnant will know the struggle to get a pair of tights that don’t leave you resembling Nora Batty!! Find a pair of tights that stay up, but also don’t feel like they are cutting off circulation can be a challenge. A lot of people say size up in your regular tights but for me that was only an option till I hit about 5 months and my bump exploded!! Over the past few weeks, I have tried 5 different pairs of tights. I have tried them under a number of different conditions to see how they hold up and I am comparing them all below. I […] The post The Best and Worst Maternity tights appeared first on The Beautiful Truth.

Isadora ACTIVE all day wear foundation review

Three things I love to review on the blog. Hair tools, concealers and foundations. I am particularly critical of all three, as I find I have drawers and drawers of foundations in particular, that have just been so hit and miss that I like to make sure people have a detailed review to see if this is something that is going to suit them. The latest foundation under the microscope is the Isadora active all day wear foundation. I initially trialed this as part of a potential collaboration for Instagram but I honestly thought it deserved it’s own blog post, as it was a product that took me throughly by […] The post Isadora ACTIVE all day wear foundation review appeared first on The Beautiful Truth.

Gold Fever Hair extensions – Your questions answered

Hair extensions are a big investment. Not only can they be a costly venture, but they can take an investment of time and effort too! Getting the right set of extensions to suit your needs is also key! I have been getting Gold Fever Hair extensions for the past 3.5 years now and I haven’t looked back. To sum it up, I quite simply adore them! I love how natural they look, how tiny the bonds are, how they hold a style so well and just look so lovely and full. That being said it is all well and good for me to rave about them having had a few […] The post Gold Fever Hair extensions – Your questions answered appeared first on The Beautiful Truth.

My current Top 5 Concealers

Concealer is an absolute must for me. Having no thyroid, work, family and blog can lead to a busy schedule. A full nights sleep is a luxury but sure that is what concealer is for! As I am getting a little older than I would like to admit, the skin underneath my eyes is getting a little bit creppy and lined. I can’t get away with the same concealers that I wore when I was younger. I need a concealer that not only covers the dark circles, but stays in place without settling in my lines and making me look ancient. To help with your search I have put together […] The post My current Top 5 Concealers appeared first on The Beautiful Truth.

Skin Republic Face masks – My top picks

While this is a sponsored post with Skin Republic, that in no way influences my opinion on the products. Having used some of these masks for a good while now I was delighted to collaborate with them to tell you all about what they have to offer.   2017/2018 really saw the sheet mask have it’s time in the spotlight. With so many on the market it can be hard to figure out what  face masks your skin will benefit from. For today’s post I have teamed up with Skin Republic to showcase a number of their masks that I have trialed over the last number of weeks and some I have […] The post Skin Republic Face masks – My top picks appeared first on The Beautiful Truth.

Empties and near empty products

It says a lot about a product when a beauty blogger finishes it! I get so many products to try, that I don’t always get a chance to finish stuff off before I have moved onto the next item that needs reviewing. If I finished every product I used before I started another, I would have no content for the blog! However, there are some that over time, I have come to the end of and I have decided to put them into a post. As a little something different, I am including a readers section too. I am going to include some products that people on my Instagram have […] The post Empties and near empty products appeared first on The Beautiful Truth.

Yes, Maskne Is Real. Here’s How To Fix It

The discovery of a new virus, COVID-19, has put us in a strange situation that created more problems than we originally had. There’s a coin shortage, food supply chain breakdown, and I haven’t seen a can of Lysol since March. In the beauty world, we were introduced to a new, but no so new skincare ailment- maskne. Formally know as acne mechanica, it’s a form of acne that occurs due to friction. Maskne is a more compound form of acne mechanica- take the friction of the mask and add dirt and bacteria from wearing an unwashed mask day in and day out and you have maskne! So how to care for it? Three steps: 1. Don’t abandon your skincare routine. Keeping your face cleansed, toned, moisturized and protected is key. If you have a routine, keep going. If you don’t, now is the time to create a routine to help your skin gain strength and remain healthy. 2. Wash that mask. What can I say? Your mask is filthy. And paper masks are wasteful and filthy (not to mention they are NOT reusable). Purchase a few cloth masks and wash your mask during your evening skincare routine. Stop washing your masks with the laundry. Hand wash in warm water using your facial cleanser. Your facial cleanser is capable of removing dirt, oil, makeup and bacteria from your mask. If you are dedicated to oil and cream cleansers, purchase a clarifying gel cleanser just for your masks. 3. Be proactive- spot treat. Before maskne, the skincare industry was full of spot treatments. Add one to your routine during the day to destroy bacteria and keep your skin clear. Here are my top 7 favorite acne spot treatments: Let’s talk about maskne! Are you currently suffering from maskne? Have you won the battle? The post Yes, Maskne Is Real. Here’s How To Fix It appeared first on Hey Aprill.

What to Pack in an Emergency Beauty Kit

Image Source: Unsplash Murphy’s law states that anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and this applies to all situations, including beauty blunders. Even if you feel like you’re all prepped and dolled up, once you step out of the house, you can’t anticipate when a beauty faux pas will happen. Think a colossal zit discovered mid-day, a sudden spill on your outfit, or an unplanned social event right after a long day at work. For these situations, you will want to have a set of tools within arm’s reach to rectify any beauty emergencies that come your way. You will need an emergency beauty kit that contains all the essentials that can take you from drab to fab when you’re on the go. And just as with a real emergency kit, emergency beauty kits have non-negotiables or staples that you must absolutely have at all times. To help you put together a kit that can rectify all your beauty troubles, take note of these essentials: Safety pins and double-sided tape While these items aren’t exactly considered beauty products, this duo can prove to be lifesavers when your outfit rips or refuses to cooperate. Shape highlights how when you’re out and about you don’t exactly have the time for sewing, but a safety pin and/or double-sided tape can come to the rescue to fix whatever needs repairing. Whether it’s a busted button on your shirt or a rip in your bottoms, these essentials can offer an easy fix. Face mists Now, this product isn’t at the top of people’s minds when they’re listing essentials, but this underappreciated wonder can make the difference between looking dull and appearing fresh. They’re multifunctional — you can use them as either a skin booster or a makeup setter, a refresher when you’re feeling particularly icky after a yoga class, or a hydrator when your skin looks parched. With just a few spritzes here and there, you can instantly improve your look. In case you’re not too familiar with face mists and want recommendations on what to get, you can check out our 2018 roundup of the best rosewater facial mists. Anti-hangover pills A beauty emergency kit is called an ’emergency kit’ for a reason. As previously mentioned, you put it together for the sole reason of having beauty items to use for unforeseen events such as an impromptu night out. When that happens, regardless of whether intended to or not, hangovers are bound to occur. To mitigate any form of future discomfort, anti-hangover pills are a great option to have on hand. Taking these during the night will help ensure that you are still functioning the next day and feeling just as fresh. Pretty Me’s review of WrecOver anti-hangover pills highlight how the ingredients include vitamins and minerals that can help the body recover after consuming too much alcohol. Not only that, but they can also help in cleansing your body of toxins, resulting in positive effects on your liver and skin. Clear nail polish A nice clear polish is useful for smoothing out any smudges or accidental chips on your new manicure, but it also serves other functions. It can stop the run in your pantyhose from growing further and it helps keep not-so-fancy jewelry from turning your skin green. Thrifty Fun notes that all you have to do is paint over the run and let it dry, and you’re pretty much good to go. Hairspray Even if you take your sweet time in the morning to do your hair, there’s no guarantee that it will stay that way until the evening. Say you’re exposed to humidity, your straightened hair could quickly turn to frizz, and your curled locks could unfortunately droop. STYLECASTE outlines how having hairspray in your emergency kit will keep your hair the way you intended it to be. It’s recommended to always keep one handy in case you need to do a quick patch-up job. Additionally, dry shampoo will also help, especially if you want to keep your scalp feeling fresh and hair smelling great after a long day. You can’t predict when beauty blunders will happen, but having these essentials with you at all times will help you stay fresh all day and night. Does EltaMD PM Therapy Have What It Takes To Fit In Your PM Skincare Routine?

This post is sponsored by BabbleBoxx on behalf of EltaMD. Skin health is dependent upon many things, but today we are going to talk about two- protection from the environment during the day and restoration at night. Think about your skincare routine during the day- it should be composed of antioxidant-rich skincare ingredients and a broad spectrum UVA/UVB SPF to protect against the sun and other environmental stressors. At night, your routine should be composed of skincare ingredients to repair and restore your skin while you sleep. Remember, sleep is important because your body works to repair organs, cells, and muscles when you drift off into a deep sleep, and your skin is the body’s largest (and most visible) organ. It is imperative that your skincare routine contains a night cream to aid in repair while you sleep. EltaMD Skincare PM Therapy Facial Moisturizer works to restore skin while at rest. It contains ceramides to strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier, niacinamide to improve skin tone, antioxidants to speed the metabolism to maximize the repair process and peptides to stimulate cell growth. I gave this facial moisturizer a spin for more than a few nights to get a feel for how it works, and most importantly, to see if I would see a difference in my skin. I love the airless pump bottle design, it makes for easy, clean dispensing. EltaMD PM Therapy dispenses like a gel-cream. I applied the moisturizer as directed- pearl-sized dots on clean, moist skin and massage using circular upward and outward motions. It is lightweight and melts into the skin with a non-greasy finish. I woke up to refreshed, visibly healthy, nourished skin. My skin was touchably soft, bright, fresh and most importantly- moisturized. This peptide moisturizer is awesome enough to be used as a daytime moisturizer as well. Just don’t forget the SPF! So, does this moisturizer have what it takes to fit into your nightly skincare routine? Absolutely! EltaMD PM Therapy Therapy Facial Moisturizer retails $32.50. What is Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL) + 6 Ways To Prevent It

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. When you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a commission. Thank you for your support. This refresher on Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL) is dedicated to the person that does not have profound respect for their moisturizer (ie, a whole bunch of you) and the role that it plays in your skincare routine. It’s for the person that washes entirely too much. The person that washes with a harsh soap and does not follow up with a hydrator or moisturizer. Your relationship with moisturizer is vital to your skincare routine for a multitude of reasons, but its most important function is to prevent the skin from losing water. When the epidermis loses water via evaporation, it’s called Transepidermal Water Loss, or TEWL. TEWL accounts for roughly 1 pint of water loss per day. That’s a lot of water! Skin affected by TEWL tends to be dry, rough, itchy, cracked and prematurely aged. Luckily, there’s something you can do about it. Keep reading to learn about 6 ways to prevent TEWL from happening to you. 1. Limit your contact with cleansers As strange as it sounds, contact with water should be limited to avoid skin barrier disruption. Cleaning too often, and using hot water, washes away the skin’s natural oils that hold water in the epidermis. It is important to hydrate and moisturize skin after making contact with water. 2. Ditch the high pH soaps Cleansers with high pH levels strip the skin of its natural oils. Use gentle cleansers and if you have to use a very strong cleanser, hydrate and moisturize skin ASAP. (source) 3. Plug in your humidifier TEWL does not fare well in humid environments. If your climate is dry, help your skin stay hydrated skin out by using a humidifier in your office, bedroom or home to increase the amount of water in the air. 4. Pick moisturizers that include emollients and occlusives Occlusive substances such as Vaseline help the skin retain water by simply keeping water out. It’s why we love slugging so much! Emollients such as jojoba seed oil, keep the skin smooth and moisturized while reducing water loss. source 5. Add products that contain Niacinamide to your routine Niacinamide, a member of the vitamin B family, has been clinically proven to reduce TEWL. In one study, 2% Niacinamide use reduced TEWL by 24%. In addition, fatty acids and ceramides were boosted as well (source). Check out some of these serums available at Ulta. 6. Attract water with humectants Humectants, such as hyaluronic acid, sorbitol, glycerin, and propylene glycol, draw moisture from their surroundings to keep skin hydrated. Here’s The One Product Your Routine Is Missing For Winter Flare-Ups

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Prosacea for IZEA Worldwide. All opinions are 100% mine. The winter months are harsh on everyone’s skin. The air outside is very dry and cold and the air inside is very warm and dry, making it difficult for humectants to draw hydration to keep the skin hydrated, and even harder for moisturizers to give skin the moisture it needs and deserves. If you suffer from rosacea, what is bad for the average person tends to be worse. Keep reading to learn about rosacea, and some essential tips to achieve healthier-looking skin. Rosacea is a very common skin condition that causes redness and small, red, bumps on the face. It is a chronic condition, and while treatment can help, it’s a condition that cannot be cured. Chances are, you’ve scoured your local drugstore looking for something to help with the symptoms, but only found products that conceal the redness and irritation. Maybe you changed your lifestyle and diet in hopes that something will help. Here’s another ally you can put in your corner to help with rosacea. Meet Prosacea, a medicated gel that helps heal the symptoms of rosacea to achieve healthier-looking skin by soothing facial redness and reducing pimples and irritation. Prosacea contains the active ingredient Sulfur 1X, along with aloe, suspended in a lightweight, fast-absorbing gel that can be used alone, under moisturizer or under makeup to help treat and heal your redness. Check out this infographic, courtesy of Prosacea about rosacea 101, the basics. Prosacea is available at the following retailers: CVS, Walgreens, Amazon, and others. Setting Your Family’s Health Standards

Pexels – CC0 License As a parent, or someone leading a family, it’s important to set a few important standards for yourself. For example, many parents find it important to keep their home well cleaned and in a thoroughly organized state, because this teaches good practice to their children and ensures they take those habits on when they live independently, and this is of course in addition to living in a beautiful, pristine home. The same could be said for many other practices you may keep. Cursing or showing road rage while driving will also make your children believe this kind of behavior is acceptable, or permissible within the right context. This is a bad habit you should try not to pass down. These impressions also last regarding the health of your family. An overweight parent will often raise overweight children, due to the dietary habits or lack of exercise they promote. Of course, this is not always the case, but it’s important to consider what you are teaching your children through these daily practices. Setting your familial health standards can be an important thing to consider, and we have some advice for this as follows: Family Checkups Family checkups can serve as a very important first step when ensuring your family’s health standards. They need to be regular, and they need to be thorough. Finding the right dentist for your family is the first, most worthwhile step. From there, ensuring that your children ensure they keep on top of their teeth, know how to brush well, and can look forward to these visits rather than dreading them will show them the benefit of regular health maintenance. Great Nutrition Great nutrition and dietary literacy can be the first, perhaps most effective means of setting up your child for a healthy life. You needn’t prevent them from ever eating at McDonalds or enjoying a sugary soda from time to time, but you can help them learn that oven-frozen simple carbohydrate meals are often quite bad for you, that they should always eat their greens, or what the best portion control means. Teaching them about the important food groups can also help them gain a degree of understanding when it comes to the meals they are served. Activity It’s important to be an active family. You needn’t have to train to be athletes or enter the olympics as a family acrobatic team in order to stay healthy, thank goodness. However, heading on bicycle rides, walking for long distances on vacation, taking a hike from time to time, playing sports in your back garden, encouraging that your children stay active and go outside with their friends or investing in them joining a community or physical lessons (such as a martial arts class) can be a very important thing to consider and take care of. This can help your family remain no stranger to physical activity, and that’s always important to keep as the norm. With this advice, we hope you can better settle your family’s health standards. Meet PCA SKIN Vitamin b3 Brightening Serum + a Mini-Lesson About Niacinamide

Niacinamide is finally getting the recognition it deserves and for good reason. Also known as B3 or Nicotinamide, Niacinamide is a water-soluble vitamin that can improve the look of pores, brighten skin tone, improve fine lines and strengthen the skin’s barrier, thus reducing the impact of environmental damage. Niacinamide is a great addition to any skincare routine because it works for every skin type and is compatible with every product in your skincare stash. Needless to say, if you do not have niacinamide in your routine, now’s a good time to start using it. PCA SKIN Vitamin b3 Brightening Serum PCA SKIN Vitamin b3 Brightening Serum promises to reduce the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin tone while improving skin barrier function. It effectively reduces skin discoloration, redness, and skin yellowing while leaving the skin’s complexion even and bright. PCA SKIN Vitamin b3 Brightening Serum is packaged in a 1 fl oz silver, airless pump bottle. The pump dispenses a semi-opaque product with a thick, gel-like consistency that applies like a serum. This product’s texture is reminiscent of PCA SKIN Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum. PCA SKIN Vitamin b3 Brightening Serum absorbs quickly into the skin leaving behind no residue or scent. Check out this before and after. The top photo is before, the bottom photo is after 21 weeks using PCA SKIN Vitamin b3 Brightening Serum as part of an integrated discoloration regimen. We have discussed in the past that PCA SKIN does not release products unless they can show that it actually works. My thoughts It’s always exciting to see PCA SKIN release new products, and this is by far my favorite release from the brand since the Hydrating Toner. I was initially under the impression niacinamide was a product for teens only, boy was I wrong. This is not your teen’s niacinamide. The packaging is smart and innovative (as always). Airless pump bottles are great for properly preserving the product and dispensing product with ease. The ingredients list is an all-star line-up sure to deliver results and improve the overall health of the skin. The star, of course, is Niacinamide to brighten the skin, reduce yellowing and reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL). It also contains glycerin to hydrate the skin, plankton extract to aid in evening skin tone, and Oligopeptide-51 to decrease the production of unwanted pigment. It only took one week of use to see a glow in my skin that I haven’t seen in a very long time, thanks to all but abandoning my skincare routine due to time constraints. I can say without my doubt that I aged my skin, and this turned back the clock in just a week. I love this product so much, that I had to add it to my PCA SKIN Pigment Perfecters Kit, which we will talk about really soon, so sit tight. Where to buy PCA SKIN Vitamin b3 Brightening Serum retails $115. If you shop at pcaskin.com, use Aprill18 and receive a full-sized Facial Wash with any purchase of $125 or more. Marketing Your Law Firm

If you run a law firm, then you will probably be fully aware that it is much like running any other kind of company, at least from the business side of things. You need to be able to draw in those clients as and when you need to, and that means knowing how to sell the company to the general public. Let’s look now at some of the best ways to market your law firm. Credit Google Ads You will find that much of your marketing relies upon digital marketing, and in particular it’s likely that you are going to want to go straight for the big guns. One of the biggest is of course Google Ads, and it would be silly not to make use of this particular tool if you were hoping to get more people interested in your law firm and aware of the services you offer. Many people find Google Ads a little difficult to use to begin with, but the truth is that you can easily get to the bottom of how it works, and you should be able to make things a lot easier for yourself by finding someone who provides clever automation for Google Ads. With that kind of help on board, there is no reason to worry about this not working out – and if anything, it is bound to make your law firm much better known in no time. Community Focus While building an online presence is certainly valuable, you should not allow it to completely overshadow what you are doing in your local community. In all the things you do, you should first and foremost make sure that you are working for your local community, which is something that you are going to find particularly easy compared to many other means of marketing. With the right kind of community focus, you will draw people in who are much more likely to use your services, and this will effectively be a great way to hone in and make your marketing much more powerful on the whole. Focus on the community more than the internet and it will likely pay off. Credit SEO Going back to online, however, you should make sure that you are making good use of SEO in your website. This is where you tailor your site so that it appears more highly in the results pages of search engines, and it is something which you can work on yourself, or hire a professional SEO team to do for you. In any case, it will prove a valuable way to market your law firm, and you’ll find you soon have the clients rolling in much more readily than before. National High Blood Pressure Education Month: Do you know the signs?

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by American Heart Association I completely understand that May is slowly coming to an end, but anytime is a good time to talk about High Blood Pressure, especially if you are a black woman. Did you know that 60 percent of non-Hispanic African American men and women suffer from high blood pressure? There isn’t a clear understanding of why we have it either-theories include obesity, diabetes, and genetics. High blood pressure is known as the silent killer, and for good reason- because there are no signs or symptoms. The headaches, dizziness, nosebleeds, sweating and/or facial flushing that people report? These are not common, or are because of extremely high pressure. The only way to know for sure is to know your blood pressure numbers and your risk factors. Check out www.heart.org/bplevels to access an interactive blood pressure chart to understand your risk. Here are a few examples of things that can raise your pressure: Family history- If mom or dad have it, you could get it too Age: The older you are, the more likely you are to get high blood pressure Gender: Until 64, men are more likely. After 65, women are more likely Race: African Americans develop it more frequently, and earlier in life, than any other racial background Kidney disease: Not only will it occur as a result of kidney disease, but it may also cause more kidney damage Lack of physical activity Diet high in sodium Drinking too much alcohol Sleep apnea Smoking and tobacco use Me? I’m fat, used to smoke (I quit 2 years ago!), have sleep apnea, used to LOVE salty and sweet foods and severely lacked physical activity until this year. Am I at risk? Sure, but have I experienced high blood pressure? Absolutely. I spent every pregnancy (5) with severely high blood pressure. It was so bad, after the birth of my last son, I fainted after labor. They cut my salt intake and encourage me to be as physically active as you can ask a pregnant woman. You know how they stereotype pregnant women- round, lazy and always eating junk food. Not me. I tried to make my meals healthier with simple changes, like adding tomato to my sandwiches and cooking with olive oil. Make changes that matter Here are a few tips that will potentially lower your numbers and save your life: Change your diet. Cut the salt, keep it well balanced. I’ve heard that cutting a gram of salt per day can drop blood pressure by as much as 5 mm Hg. Reduce how often you drink alcohol Enjoy regular physical activity. Get out there and get to moving! Manage stress. Quit smoking Learn your risks, know your numbers, treat the problem, save your life. Challenge your friends and family to know their numbers too! Summer Faves and Raves: Skin Care and Makeup From Honest Beauty

Got some thoughts on the latest makeup and skin care from Honest Beauty. Here are some things I’ve been using and loving… Cat Eye Kit – Mascara & Eyeliner This one comes with 1) a dual-ended mascara with a primer on one side and a black lengthening mascara on the other, and 2) a fine-tipped black liquid liner with a flexible felt tip. The primer and mascara combo stretches and lifts lashes for a natural-looking fringe that feels lightweight and doesn’t smudge. As for the liner…it’s SO GOOD. It’s long lasting, deeply pigmented (no blue undertones) and extremely precise. I’ve sweated and cried with it on, and it doesn’t move. Surprisingly though, it’s still easy to remove at the end of the day. $19.99 for a 2-piece kit. INGREDIENTS Mascara Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Beeswax (Cera Alba), Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Castor Isostearate Beeswax Succinate, Acacia Senegal Gum, Cellulose, Glyceryl Behenate, Jojoba Esters, Tocopherol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Caprylyl Glycol, Cetyl Palmitate, Sorbitan Olivate, Sorbitan Palmitate, Xanthan Gum, Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Sodium Benzoate, Cellulose Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Phytate, Phosphoric Acid, Iron Oxides (CI 77499). Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 638

🌻 1. Claw clip or scrunchie? Scrunchies-4-life, lady! 2. Speaking of scrunchies, do you actually wash yours? I have about a handful of them and will throw them in the washer every couple weeks (or so), but back in the day when scrunchies were ubiquitous — when they were at the height of their scrunchie-ness — I did not. This was gross, now that I think about it… I bet all of mine were crusted over with hairspray and L’Oréal Pumping Curls. 3. Benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid? Benzoyl peroxide. It’s not revolutionary, but BP works for my skin! 4. Should your manicure match your pedicure? Hmm… I prefer having different colors on my nails than I have on my toes, but cohesiveness is cool too! Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 619

I know it’s hard to believe now, but before Tabs, very few cats actually gardened. Feline gardening wasn’t really “a thing” yet. Like he did with so many things, from cat athletics (a.k.a catisthenics) to modeling to feline philanthropy, he pioneered landscape design for cats and cat enthusiasts. And he also shared his knowledge with other cats through his many nature camps. Tabs believed that the secret to inner kitty modeling purrfection was only attainable through achieving balance with nature. Rosie has also displayed an aptitude for feline gardening. She’s done some amazing things this summer with lettuce on the deck and is extremely talented with tomatoes. I think she’s the reason we’ve experienced such a bounty. She takes her gardening very seriously, too, and begins every morning with 15 minutes of stretching. I’m glad Rosie has decided to continue Tabby’s legacy of feline gardening greatness. 😺🥬🍅 Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, Karen Continue reading "Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 619" on Makeup and Beauty Blog.

I was shocked — ABSOLUTELY FLABBERGASTED! — when I found out future Hall of Fame NFL quarterback Tom Brady doesn’t eat tomatoes, because I cannot comprehend life without tomatoes. 🍅 Why!? Apparently, they can cause joint inflammation. Who knew?! Well, too bad, Tom, because you are no longer invited to my house for lunch today, because I’m having homemade bruschetta. I’ve been eating so. Many. Tomatoes. Lately. Like, obnoxious amounts of ’em because we have a couple of very productive tomato plants on the back deck. El Hub, otherwise known as “The Keeper of the Tomato Plants,” must’ve pleased the tomato gods this year, because they’ve blessed us with a profound amount of the fruit. And yup, tomatoes are fruit! (I’m full of fun facts this morning.) We’re doing bruschetta, caprese salad, tomato basil pasta… Basically, if a dish contains tomatoes, chances are we’re eating it, and it’s been glorious! One thing I’ve yet to try, though, is a tomato pie. A friend of mine on Facebook posted one she made, and I’m extremely curious about it. If you happen to have a recipe, please let me know. Glam on the Go: A Creamy, Dreamy Purple and Gold Look With Big, Bushy Brows

Note to self: stop overcomplicating things, both in life and in makeup! Because sometimes taking the easy route is actually, well…easier. And sometimes it turns out better than you expect! I did the *least* complicated eyeshadow placement in this eye look, and I ended up liking the final result so much that I can’t wait to wear it again (I might do it again today, ha!). How to do creamy, dreamy purple and golden bronze lids with a smattering of sparkle Here’s what I did: I started with a layer of matte purple cream liner as a base with a satiny bronzy gold blended directly on top. Then, I rimmed my water lines with a creamy warm brown eye pencil and buffed a little bit of it from the lash line to my crease, and on the outer third, for a subtle hint of depth. Next, I pushed a bit of glittery cream shadow onto the upper lash line, whacked some mascara on my lashes, and that’s it. DONE! UD Brow Blade is the best If you’re into bold brows, my brows are epically bushy — again, with minimal effort! Bolden Beauty: By Black Girls, For Black Girls

Disclosure: Bolden Beauty: By Black Girls, For Black Girls contains press samples provided by the Bolden. In addition, this post contains affiliate links. Bolden is a skincare brand founded by two black women. Their brand carries products specifically for darker skin tones. Since the creation of Bolden, Target now carries Bolden, which is an amazing milestone. The brand reached out Fall 2018 to try a few products from the line. Check out what claims the brand makes and my thoughts and decide whether Bolden offers products that would improve your skincare routine. Skin Clarifying Cleanser, $16.50 Bolden Skin Clarifying Cleanser is described as a gentle, pH balanced formulation that addresses the needs of anyone with dull, congested and breakout prone skin. My thoughts: Cleansers go down the drain, so their importance in a routine is minimal, as you will rarely see benefits from just cleansing. Bolden clarifying cleanser is your typical cleanser that does what it’s supposed to do- it cleanses. Peeking at the ingredients list, I’d advise anyone with sensitive skin to beware, as this cleanser contains artificial fragrance and three dyes. There are also no ingredients to decongest as it claims. Does it cleanse? Sure it does. It’s a cleanser. Bolden Skin Brightening Toner, $19.50 Bolden Skin Brightening Glycolic Acid Toner is described as a toner that promises to dimish dark spots, tighten pores, prevent breakouts and control oil and shine. My thoughts: Bolden Skin Brightening Toner is a medley of witch hazel, niacinamide, glycolic acid, sodium hyaluronate, and antioxidants. One ingredient that caught my eye was corn starch, typically used skincare formulas for oily skin, which makes a good thing better. It’s gentle like a hydrating toner and powerful like an exfoliant without stinging and burning. Bolden Nighttime Repair Serum, $29.50 Bolden Nighttime Repair Serum claims to target damage caused by acne, sun exposure and aging. It features 10% glycolic acid. My thoughts: It’s rare that I run across glycolic acid serums as everyone typically adds it toners, so it was refreshing to see it in serum form. It is packaged in an airless pump (5 stars!!) and dispenses like a gel lotion and quickly absorbs. It is not greasy, so it’s not going to be heavy enough to double as a moisturizer. Always wear your AHA’s at night and follow this serum up with a good moisturizer for max efficacy. Bolden Brightening Moisturizer SPF 30, $28 Bolden Brightening Moisturizer is described as a broad spectrum sun protectant that improves skin texture and appearance My thoughts: I fell in love with the moisturizer at first sight of the ingredients list. Shea butter meets linoleic acid meets a gentle version of vitamin c meets squalane. Because this line of products was created by black women, for black women, the SPF does not leave a white cast on the skin. I would highly recommend adding a Hyaluronic Acid serum to the equation to add some hydration. Unfortunately, I have to add a buyer beware footnote, as this moisturizer does contain fragrance. If you are sensitive to products that contain fragrance, skip this one. The smell is a bit odd and lingers. I secretly wonder if they really needed the fragrance. Bolden also offers other products including: Glow Hydrating Mask Clear Skin Clay Mask Overnight Spot Treatment Check out everything Bolden has to offer by visiting their website. Target does not carry the brand’s full SKU, but they do carry the cleanser, toner, glycolic acid serum, and clay mask. Product Spotlight: Stila Peony Convertible Color Dual Lip and Cheek Cream

Are there actually peonies on Stila’s $25 Peony Convertible Color cream blush? Hmm… Don’t those flowers on the lid kind of look like succulents? Inquiring minds want to know! 😂 This brownish pink cream blush has a matte finish that is faboo for video calls. When I sweep it on the apples of my cheeks, which I just do, BTW, with my fingers, it instantly warms up my face with a delicate, translucent rosy brown flush. If you like a natural cheek look, both on camera and in person, I think you’ll like it as much as I do. It feels like a non-sticky (unlike some cream blushes), practically weightless cream concealer, except it comes in a pan (think Laura Mercier Secret Concealer or MAC Studio Finish concealer), so it’s thin and creamy. I love that it isn’t incredibly obvious on my skin either. It just adds a little color to liven things up without looking like I went through makeup heavy lifting. Added bonus: Peony doubles as a lipstick (and, I suspect, could also work as an eyeshadow). In this pic I’m wearing it blended on my cheeks and tapped lightly on my lips. How to Tell if You’re Overwashing Your Skin

Oh, you guys. Parenting during a pandemic: it is not for the faint of heart. Like many people, El Hub and I have had to make some tough decisions about sending our kid back to school, so it’s been a rough week… So rough that even lipstick could barely get me through it. But you know. We’re brave. And we’re tough. And we can do things we never thought we could do, right? At least that’s what I keep telling myself 10 million times a day. I’ve started doing this thing where I set reminders on my phone with my affirmations, so they pop up throughout the day, and I can just read them over and over again. You know what they say — fake it ’til you make it. You know what they also say? When the going get tough, the tough eat pasta, which is why you’re looking at that pasta picture at the top. (I should’ve probably intro’d with that, whoops!) If any picture were able to convey that Connor is 100% her mother’s daughter, it would be this one… Which reminds me, I made this lemon tagliatelle pasta from Laura in the Kitchen a few days ago… I gave Connor her plate, stepped out of the room to go check something, and when I came back this was how she was eating her food. FOTD: Low-Key Bronzed, Glowing Skin With Bright Pink Lips

Good morning and TGIF! Extra TGIF, right? 😀 So…you know your world has taken an unexpected turn when you choose to wear a wrinkled shirt and low-key bronzed J Lo.-inspired skin to go get your blood drawn at the hospital and it’s like you’re about to walk the red carpet at the Met Gala. All is well, by the way. I just had my annual checkup to make sure everything’s working correctly, and it is (*knock on wood*). So yeah, I was wearing this look under my mask when I went to the lab, and I felt happier and more outgoing than I have in ages. I cracked jokes with the lab tech who drew like 10 vials of blood from my arm (it was actually three, but who’s counting?), and I more than enthusiastically told everyone I ran into to “HAVE A GREAT REST OF YOUR DAY!” There’s definitely something to be said for pushing yourself to do the things you know make you feel better, even when you aren’t really feeling it at first! By the way, the blush/bronzer and eyeshadow are all from the same palette, a multi-use powder palette called the Pixi Summer Glow Palette. Have You Been Wearing More or Less Makeup Lately?

Ya know, I go through phases. Sometimes, I’ll diligently wear makeup every day, and I’ll remember how much better I feel when my brows are combed and my lashes are curled and coated with mascara (at a minimum), but then for any number of reasons nowadays I’ll slip into a pit of semi-despair (sounds dramatic, but it feels that way sometimes) and forget to put any makeup for several days… During those phases I’ll tend to also let other things slide, like I won’t do my hair, and I’ll rock wrinkly clothes that could easily double as pajamas. Eventually, I snap out of it and realize, yet again, that when I put in a little effort and “show up for myself,” I feel better all around. So it’s cyclical, I guess. One thing that helps me is reminding myself that I don’t have to don everything and the kitchen sink. Even a little bit of self-care counts and makes a big difference in my mood. Sometimes I feel like I have to do “spicy” or “exciting” looks, partly out of habit, and sometimes just so I can talk about them here on MBB. Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 620

Tabs was a big personality. He was like a movie star in his own life, and he was always surprising us. I swear, every single day he did something that made me shake my head in amazement. He was truly larger than life. But, you know, that cat also had quirks. Like most cats do. I mean, he did some things that were just…unexplainable. For instance, he always — and I’m talking about years here — always hopped up on on the bed from the same side. It was always the right. Never the left. I guess you could say he was many things, including incredibly consistent about his bedtime ritual. Why? You tell me… I have no idea. It was just one of the mysteries of the world, and I think once I tried to get him to climb up from the opposite side, and he nearly short circuited. He grumbled, hopped down and raced out of the room. Some may say it was good old-fashioned cat neurosis, but I attribute it to his incredible discipline. After all, you can’t build a global kitty modeling empire without consistency, and he took his beauty sleep as seriously as he took posing. Practical Stuff I Like: The New Baylis & Harding Hand Washes at Target, a Budget Beauty’s Version of Molton Brown

What song do you sing when you’re washing your hands? Normally, I sing “Happy Birthday” to Keanu Reeves two or three times to keep it simple (because Keanu 😍), but sometimes I veer into Prince territory (“She wore a raspberry beret, the kind you get at a secondhand store. Raspberry beret, and if it was warm she wouldn’t wear much more. Raspberry beret. I think I love her.”) I would wear his blue suit with clouds in a heartbeat to Trader Joe’s. ’tis a sign of the (pandemic) times when one gets their thrills from testing different hand soaps… Seriously, the bar for my amusement is set so low now! So…I like to try new hand soaps, and right now I’m into Baylis & Harding, a new line of vegan liquid hand soaps at Target. They smell fancy! The scents have notes, base notes, middle notes — the whole shebang — and they lather up into big, luscious bubbles. Think Molton Brown, but at a drugstore price. They’re made in the UK and don’t contain parabens, silicones and dyes, and a huge 16.9-oz. bottle is just $7.39. FOTD: Glowing and Natural Makeup With Coppery Lids and Nude Lips

When the going gets tough, the tough wear MAC (at least they do in my world, ha!). MAC is my makeup comfort food… It’s like an In-n-Out Double Double with grilled onions, fries and a vanilla shake (of course). When I need a little TLC, Saddle and Soft Brown usually work for me. 👍 I’m wearing both of them in this look here, along with some coppery action on my lids via two In Extra Dimension Eyeshadow faves — Amorous Alloy and Havana. Girlfriend, have you gotten on the In Extra Dimension train yet? They’re a sub-family of eyeshadows in the permanent line, and they’re so, so good. They feel light and airy, almost like a cream, but blend like a powder, and all of them have a very distinct shiny finish, which is a little bit more intense than a satin but less intense than a frost. They’re also super long lasting, too, and incredibly easy to blend. Talk about unsung makeup heroes. Back to the copper shades…Havana is a warm chocolate brown with that has a secret hidden coppery glint (grab it if you want a mostly brown with a touch of copper), and Amorous Alloy is a reddish orangey copper (it’s the one for you if you love how orangey or reddish browns look on your lids). Recipe: Summer Corn Tomato and Basil Salad

This is the crunchy corn salad, also known as the “Summer Party in Your Mouth!” I mentioned a few days ago. It’s just a few simple ingredients. As you might expect, there’s corn…and there’s also tomatoes, basil, olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper. I’ve been making it at least once a week for a month, and every time the fam-bam gobbles it all up. It’s good! Of course you can tweak it to your liking. The way I describe it here, it comes together in about 15 minutes. So far, I’ve served it with hot dogs, with parmesan chicken, with basil parmesan salmon, with caprese salad, and lemon pasta, and…well, it rocks with just about any protein and side. I also HIGHLY recommend it on its own with a side of crusty, fresh bread. YUM! Fresh corn is preferred, but I’m not above using frozen or canned corn if that’s all I have in the house. If you’re using fresh corn, you’ll have to remove the kernels from the cobs first… So that’s something to consider. It probably takes the most time. I do it by taking two bowls — one big, one small — and start by inverting the smaller bowl inside the bigger one so that the edge of the smaller bowl sits flat inside the bigger bowl. FOTD: A Clean and (Almost) Effortless Makeup Look Using Mostly MAC Classics

I PUT ON EARRINGS TODAY! *And* a full-face of makeup. Take that, pandemic blues! 🤗 I was going for clean and effortless with simple matte browns to define the lids and an elegant dark brown winged liner. And, yes, girlfriend, you read that correctly: Dark. Brown. Winged. Liner. Back in the day (uh, two years ago?), winged liner was hallowed ground reserved solely for either black or jewel tones. I liked — and still like — the intense drama of the contrast of a solid black or a brightly colored line against my lids, but I’ve reached the point where I’ll try anything to get myself out of the makeup funk I’ve been experiencing over the last couple months, which currently involves playing with makeup in ways that aren’t overwhelming. Like, there’s no way homegirl is about to knock out a look with five colors in the crease right now, but I’m certainly down to try a dark chocolaty wing. And, ya know, I really like it! It’s like the kinder, gentler version of winged liner without the stark black edges. I mean, you still see the crisp lines, but I think there’s something less severe about the brown. 🌻 1. Brush or Beauty Blender? Hmm… Beauty Blenders are quite handy…but I’ll take the brush because I could do more with it. 2. Apples or oranges? I like them both a lot, but I’ll go with apples BECAUSE APPLE PASTRY. And apple turnovers. And apple fritters! Plus, there are so many varieties of apples. (I’m a honeycrisp girl, myself.) This week at our house we’re enjoying the Granny Smith. 3. An old-school makeup product you’ve used for-ev-er? MAC Powersurge eyeliner. Been using it for well over a decade! 4. A fancy beauty product you love? Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter is magic (albeit expensive magic, hahaha). 5. River, lake or ocean? Frankly, any of the above. I wouldn’t mind a tranquil, warm lake right now, but I’m a beach baby at heart. Continue reading "Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 639" on Makeup and Beauty Blog.

Product Spotlight: MAC More the Mehr-ier Powder Kiss Liquid Lipcolour

In a current beauty world where color is seemingly dominated by warm reddish and orangey brown tones, it’s refreshing to see a cool-toned lippie every once in a while, don’t you think? Enter More the Mehr-ier, from the new MAC Powder Kiss Liquid Lipcolour collection! MAC was very cheeky with the name — Mehr-ier, for “merrier.” It’s a reference to one of their most iconic nude lipsticks, Mehr, which, fun fact, first appeared in the 2010 MAC Mickey Contractor collection. It’s since become a member of MAC’s permanent lipstick collection, and is now here in the new Powder Kiss Liquid Lipstick formula. The color is very similar to the original Mehr, just a tinge darker. It’s a nude mauve, and this is going to sound weird, but it’s the same color as my gums (LOL!). For that reason, it reads like a nude lipstick on my NC42 skin, which is why I love it. I’ve also seen the original Mehr lipstick on lighter and darker skin tones (fast forward to 2:11 in the video), and it’s a bestseller because it really does work well on everyone. The original Mehr comes in the MAC Matte lipstick formula, which some people find challenging to wear, especially if they have lip lines and/or flakes. FOTD: Elegant Rose Quartz Gemstone Lids With a Smokey Bronze Lower Lash Line

I wore this look to drop Connor off at her dance class (she’s taking outdoor classes two days a week now, and yay for seeing other kids her age!), and then to go to Trader Joe’s, because doing that kind of regular everyday stuff is the adult equivalent of going to your high school senior prom now. (Dance studio drop-off IS AN EVENT. Ya gotta do it up!) I took the new Urban Decay Stoned Vibes Palette for a spin for the first time in this look. It’s a new palette with 12 powder eyeshadows, the majority of them with this chonky-looking glitter formula that has a bit of squish to it. They look like they could potentially look like you’re wearing big flakes of glitter on your skin, but there was hardly any floof, fallout or flakes when I got Tiger’s Eye on my lids. The formula applies smoother than I expected it to, but you get WHOA, WHOA, WHOOOOOA levels of shimmer. So…Urban Decay isn’t shy about their 420 references, but in this case I think “Stoned Vibes” actually refers to, ya know…gemstones, although Tiger’s Eye looks nothing like a stone on my eyelids. Product Spotlight: MAC Powder Kiss Eye Shadow

MAC should just make these Powder Kiss Matte Eyeshadows permanent already. Come on, MAC! Dooo it! Make our lives a little easier. 😂 If you like ultra-blended, blurred and blown-out eyeshadow as much as I do, the Powder Kisses will get you there without drama. They’re highly pigmented, for one thing. Two, they apply in the thinnest, smoothest layers imaginable, so they look and feel featherweight on your lids. At the same time, they’re super saturated, which is kinda crazy! Even though you don’t have to use very much, if you do, they still won’t look chunky. It’s FASCINATING. MAC must’ve assigned the “A” team to these when they cooked them up in the lab. Many matte powder shadows look thick and cakey on my lids (got some fine line action!), especially when I build up layers, but not these. The Powder Kisses definitely don’t emphasize my fine lines. There are some crazy colors, of course, because it’s MAC, after all, but as far as everyday workhorse colors, I’ve been loving What Clout, a matte mid-toned warm brown that looks like a cross between Soft Brown and Soba with maybe a hint of Kid. Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 643

🌻 1. Last show you binged and loved? Ted Lasso on Apple TV. It stars Jason Sudeikis, who — fun fact — is a solid basketball player in his own right. The show is about an acclaimed collegiate American football coach who moves to England when he’s given the chance to coach a professional football (as in soccer!) team there. It’s got a lot of what we like to call in our house “potty talk,” a.k.a. “lazy language,” a.k.a. “four-letter words,” but I really like the characters, and I love the overall optimistic feel of the show. The main characters, shockingly (for a show in this day and age), continuously choose to be kind. It’s very refreshing. 2. Last thing you drank? I just took a sip of Nestle Pure Life Protect in Blackberry, which I got as a sample with my usual monthly water bottle delivery. Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 624

Even though our old front yard was a bit of a mess, overgrown and very “lived in,” Tabs loved it more than anyone. To him, it was a gateway to adventure. So many sassy birds, lively lizards, interesting insects and fragrant flowers to smell. It was also the tapestry of his feline fashion designs. It’s where he got many of his best ideas. But with Tabs living his best afterlife now over the Rainbow Bridge, the time has come for a front yard revamp. It’s not quite done, but it’s getting there, and I feel like Tabs would approve of the design decisions. It’s sort of Mediterranean with a touch of Southern Belle…just like Tabs. Rosie’s landscape influence It also reflects Rosie’s more minimalist design aesthetic, with more negative space than there was before. She’s just beginning to get comfortable going for walks on her leash and exploring the neighborhood. She’s learning fast! Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, Karen Continue reading "Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 624" on Makeup and Beauty Blog.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 645

🌻 1. Dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate? Dark chocolate tastes like punishment to me…and white chocolate doesn’t really taste like much at all, so I’ll take some really good milk chocolate for the win, please! See’s preferably! 🍫😁 2. Would you like winged liner with a matte finish, or a shiny finish today? I’ll go for shiny today. ✨ 3. Something you’re putting off at the moment? Cleaning my bathroom… I’ve got to do it soon (hopefully this week) because it’s on the brink of true grossness! Not quite full-on disgusting yet, but it’s getting there. 4. A weird beauty-related pet peeve of yours? I absolutely cannot stand when my hair smells like barbecue. YUCK! Also, when my toenails or fingernails are even just a tad too long, I’m basically non-functional. Continue reading "Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 645" on Makeup and Beauty Blog.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 626

Tabs got along with almost everyone. Almost, with the exception of a few people and cats, including his corporate nemesis Harris, who staged a hostile takeover attempt of Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC a few years ago. It failed, of course. Tabs adeptly defended his ownership of the company by purchasing all of the outstanding shares from the other members of the board of cat directors (didn’t hurt that he also sent them care packages of canned tuna in gravy). Even though he’d been defeated, Harris never let up. He continued to torment Tabs for years, often attempting to sneak onto company property. Luckily, Tabs was always here to protect it. When Tabs passed away last year, we thought Harris would give up and set his sights on a new corporate conquest. But apparently that was wishful thinking… Rosie to Harris, “Get off our property!” Rosie and I have been going for walks on Sunday mornings now, like Tabs and I used to. Rise and shine, morning glory! Good morning! I may or may not have just ingested what may, technically, be described as a dessert for breakfast, and while part of me feels like I shouldn’t tell you about this cake from Trader Joe’s because its health benefits are…beyond questionable, another part of me does because it’s SO DANG DELICIOUS. I don’t know what’s going on with this brownie pumpkin blondie confection, but it’s crazy addictive. It’s so good that you have to close your eyes when you take a bite. It’s that serious! If a pumpkin cake met a carrot cake that met a white chocolate/slash pecan fantasy, this would be their progeny. Like…I’m not normally into white chocolate chips, but I’m all over them in this. Normally, I’m not a fan of chocolate and pumpkin together, but they are WORKIN’ here. Mmm… The crumb is so light it just melts in your mouth. Perfect with a cup of hot coffee. So, yeah! You’ll either love me or hate me because I told you about this. 😁 Or, maybe you’ll love AND hate me, hahaha! Continue reading "Saturday Surfing, Sep. 26, 2020" on Makeup and Beauty Blog.

Brand Spotlight: Bossy Cosmetics

Bossy Cosmetics is a new cruelty-free Black-owned indie makeup line of lip products that caters to all skin tones. I’m a fan, especially of the lipgloss! Do you know the Kelis tune, “I’m Bossy?” It’s practically my theme song, ha ha ha! If you’ve ever been called bossy by your friends and family, you’ll probably get a kick out of this. Hues for bossy gals of all shades Bossy Cosmetics cruelty-free, vegan line of lip products launched in 2019, so they’re pretty new. The founder, Aisha, is a mom of three and a self-proclaimed “lipstick junkie” who worked in investment banking before starting the brand with the intent to 1) help women feel beautiful, and 2) pay it forward, as part of the proceeds go toward charities that support women and girls. Inclusivity is one of their main pillars, so you’ll find colors for all skin tones and ethnicities. Prices range from $16.99 for a liquid lipstick, to $13.99 for a lip liner, to $14.99 for a gloss and $18.99 for a lip/eye/cheek glitter, so they’re pricier than Revlon or Neutrogena, but slightly less than MAC. FOTD: Another Single-Product Eye Look With a MAC Classic

If you want to be truly terrified, don’t fire up a horror movie on Netflix. Instead, put on your makeup in full sunlight. HAHAHA! Dude. It’s kinda scary seeing a lot of product on your skin in such unforgiving light. Or maybe that’s just me because I haven’t been doing a lot of full-on makeup over the past few months (#pandemiclife). So, I did this look yesterday morning because I made a promise to myself to put on some makeup. (I realize that my mask covers almost everything, but still, sometimes putting on makeup still makes me feel better.) Connor had an outdoor playdate with a friend, and we were going to be outside for most of the afternoon, so in the morning I decided to use the natural sunlight streaming in through my window to help guide me through this one-product eye look with MAC Powersurge pencil. I used it as an eyeshadow and a liner all on my lids! Connor’s playdate was for outdoor “cake painting,” an idea I got from Busy Toddler on Instagram. I taped a bunch of big boxes together to look like an oversized cake, and Connor and her buddy painted the layers with washable tempura paint. Saturday Surfing, Oct. 10, 2020

Hiya, beautiful! Ah, deep breath in… Deep breath out… We made it to the weekend! (And I’m assuming you’re still in one piece?! I really hope so.) I’m in the mood for coffee and a chocolate croissant this morning because I just finished binge watching this show on Netflix… It’s from Darren Star, the guy who also did Sex and the City, and if you and your brain desperately need to be transported to a light and fluffy, frothy universe for a few hours…it’s the way to go. It’s about an American girl who works in marketing and moves to Paris — without knowing a lick of French, SAY WHAT?! — for a new job. It’s a little soapy, a little corny, and not remotely close to realistic at all, but it’s lots of fun! I warn you…by the end of the season, you may find yourself craving a baguette, a hunk of cheese and a glass of bubbly. 🥂 If I get any alone time by myself this weekend, I just might rewatch a few episodes. Anywho, grab your breakfast wine coffee or tea, and settle down for a bit with this week’s reading… Thick black eyeliner and matte smokey eyes are ’90s eye makeup trends that are supposed to be major next year. Easy, Elegant Fall Eye Makeup With Sapphire Lids and Liner

Just a friendly reminder (UM, MOSTLY TO MYSELF, LOL!) that one doesn’t need to constantly reinvent the wheel when it comes to eye makeup. For this look with sapphire blue lids and a warm brown matte crease, I used the same base, crease and lower lash line eye products from yesterday’s fall green look. All I did was swap out the greens on the lids for blue! Keep talkin’ to me If you tend to make things harder than they need to be (hello, welcome to my world), then this sort of “makeup template” will make your life 100% easier because you can keep your key neutral elements. All you do is switch out the colorful shades. Et voila! — you have something fresh and new. Two BIG thangs I love about this look 1. It’s a little flashy, but not overly so. One thing I love about wearing browns in the crease and colorful jewel tones on the lid and lash lines is that it doesn’t look overdone in real life. Like, when you see this look from the side or straight on, you mostly see the browns, so it looks like a standard-issue neutral look. Easy, Elegant Fall Eye Makeup With Green Lids and Liner

Is green eye makeup more of a fall or a spring look for you? ASKING FOR A FRIEND. I think if you’ve got a dark green up in the mix, like a jewel-toned green or an emerald green, then yeah, whatever’s happening on your lids is totally a fall look, especially if you add a matte nude or matte brown lippie to the mix. That’s what I did the other day. I wore this green lid-and-liner combo using a shimmery light medium green shadow on my lids and a dark green opalescent pencil liner (with a touch of a darker grayish green on the outer corner) to get groceries and pick up Coywolf from preschool, and I got the nicest compliments from her teachers. I think the matte browns in the crease and the beige base help to keep the greens wearable for daytime because the neutrals ground the brighter lid and lash line. Of course, this same placement would also work with other jewel-toned shades, and hmm… Now that I think about it, I may have to try sapphire liner and lids next! For the eye makeup I used… Beige matte shadow base: NARS Tinted Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base in Light Beige shadow: MAC Mylar Light warm matte brown shadow: MAC Soft Brown Mid-toned warm matte brown shadow: MAC Saddle Dark mate brown shadow: MAC Brun Dark green pencil: Urban Decay Loaded Light green eyeshadow: Urban Decay Mildew Dark grayish green shadow: MAC Club Bronze pencil: MAC Teddy A few more quick winged tips, in case you decide to try this look! Q & A: Have You Ever Dated Anyone With a Perm?

I feel like if we were in the thick of ’80s, the chances of most of us answering “yes” to this question would be extremely high! HAHAHAHA! By the time I was of dating age, most dudes I knew didn’t have perms (mullets are another story, though), so no, I’ve never dated anyone with a perm. Hmm… Well, now that I think about it, I can’t say that with 100% certainty because I did go out on a date with a dude with ramen noodle-esque curly hair that looked like Justin Timberlake during the N’Sync era! His hair was coated in very hard-looking gel, and the curls were shiny and ultra sculpted. His entire mane was one solid unit; not one lick of it moved. I spent the entire date wondering if his hair was naturally curly or if it was permed. Anyway, now I’m thinking about how El Hub with a perm, and it’s cracking me up! Knowing him, though, he’d still find a way to pull it off. LOL! So how about you? Have you ever dated anyone with a perm? AND, OH MY GOSH…I cannot wait to find out if anyone actually answers “yes” to this! Continue reading "Q & A: Have You Ever Dated Anyone With a Perm?" on Makeup and Beauty Blog.

Product Spotlight: Pantene Miracle Moisture Boost Shampoo and Conditioner With Rosewater

I absolutely love this stuff! If you’re looking for a budget-friendly, moisturizing shampoo and conditioner for smoothing frizzy hair, this drugstore duo is a star. The most tragic thing about Pantene Rosewater Shampoo and Conditioner is that they aren’t sold in wine barrel-sized vats! Yes, they’re both that good. I went to Target yesterday and picked up my fourth bottle of each! This sulfate-free drugstore shampoo and conditioner is made to moisturize dry strands and tame frizzy hair, and it’s been a minor miracle for my grays, which I’ve been growing out for over a year now. My grays, especially the ones around my bangs and hairline, are totally and completely unruly, and this set helps to smooth down the noodle strands that stick up at all kinds of weird angles. Here’s the kicker: both the shampoo and conditioner tame the crazies without weighing my strands down. I don’t like most hair products designed to defrizz and smooth because they usually leave a noticeable residue, and I don’t like it when my hair looks and feels like it’s covered in “stuff.” Not a fan of flat helmet head, ya know? Even though these work well, they don’t leave a thick residue behind. Saturday Surfing, Oct. 17, 2020

OK, totally shook. I had the weirdest dream last night… Well, technically, early this morning, because the ones I have just before I wake up are for some reason the strange ones. (Good morning, by the way. Please feel free to help yourself to some chocolate chip cake for breakfast because that’s how we roll around here.) Anyway, the dream included this dude… Otherwise known as my boyfriend, otherwise known as Keanu Reeves. In my dream he was the present-day bearded and long-haired John Wick-version of Keanu. We were at a wine bar on a date, and it started off all cute and sweet, but things went south when Keanu proceeded to get totally and completely sh*t-faced, sloppy drunk. I was not in the mood at all for nonsense and had no patience for his toddler-esque tomfoolery, but I still wanted to stay on the date and not go home quite yet, so in the stern “Mom Tone” usually reserved for bratty children, I said to our server, “I CANNOT DEAL WITH THIS MAN RIGHT NOW!” And then I parked his drunk @ss at a table with some random nerdy looking comic book dudes and went about my business of having a good time. This or That: Nail Polish Edition

How to play Pick one or the other for each of the questions below, and copy/paste with your answers in the comments. Can’t wait to see your picks! Mine are listed below. 💋 Copy and paste Treat yo’ self! Do you get a fancy-schmancy spa manicure or a pedicure? Short or long fingernails? Base coat or top coat? Regularly scheduled manicure maintenance: at-home or salon? Glitter or cream finish? Cuticles: cut ‘em or leave ‘em alone? Faux press-on nails or nail polish stickers? Nude nail polish or dark nail polish? Over the top nail art: Y or N? Treat yo’ self! Do you get a fancy-schmancy spa manicure or a pedicure? Well, in the dream scenario, if I were really treating myself, I’d get both done, hahaha! And I’d be in a robe, and Keanu Reeves would be feeding me warm chocolate chip cookies…but if I had to pick just one, I’d go with pedicure, since it would last longer. Short or long fingernails? Short please! I cannot deal with the sound (or the feel) of my fingertips clack-clack-clacking on a keyboard. Continue reading "This or That: Nail Polish Edition" on Makeup and Beauty Blog.

5 Things I’ve Been Loving Lately

1. Bold-ish brows OK, after months of wearing a chill, super relaxed brow look (and sometimes just skipping brow products entirely!), I’m back in the habit of doing a full brow again, and I had one of those “Why did I ever stop doing this?” moments. When I put a little effort into my brows — extending the tail on my right brow and filling out the skinny spots (I’m talking to you, Raul!) — it’s kind of fantastic, and I feel like I can get away with less makeup. Remember when Jeremy Renner said “Brows, Lashes, lips frame the face”? He really was the makeup prophet of our times… By the way, I’ve been into an old-school UD product as of late, their Brow Beater pencil in Neutral Brown. SO. GOOD. It’s the one with a twist-up pencil on one side and a brow brush on the other. It’s harder than many pencils, and it stays put (the softer ones seem to disappear faster). It also looks natural because it has a perfect balance of pigment. 2. Chocolate sprinkles on toast Thank you for educating me about Dutch hagelslag, otherwise known as “chocolate sprinkles on buttered toast,” otherwise known as “a delightful breakfast treat!” I bought a box of chocolate sprinkles at World Market a while back because the picture on the box was just so weird, and curiosity got the best of me. Product Spotlight: It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better Foundation + Skincare

This is GREAT stuff! I haven’t been this excited about a base product in eons. If you’re into a natural matte look and want a foundation that covers juuust enough, It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better Foundation + Skincare is so on the money. OK, I get it. Everyone’s masked up, we’re in a pandemic, hardly anyone’s been wanting to wear makeup, myself included, but I’ve been falling back into my face painting groove lately, and part of the reason is because of this new foundation from It Cosmetics. It handles basically every lighting and photography situation I’ve throw it. It makes my skin look dayum good, if I do say so myself, AND IT FEELS LIKE NOTHING ON MY FACE! Your Skin But Better Foundation + Skincare is a medium-coverage liquid foundation with a very natural looking matte finish. Recipes for a Tropical-Inspired Plate Lunch: Hawaiian Chicken, Hawaiian Mac Salad, Coconut Rice, and Cucumber and Carrot Salad

Hi, friend! If you’ve been hanging with me here at MBB for a while, you might already know that my husband (the infamous El Hub!) is from Oahu in Hawaii, and we try to visit when we can to see our family. We had trips planned for this year to celebrate some big birthdays for the grandparents, but, as you know, “The ‘Rona” was like “HAHAHAAAAAA,” so we haven’t been able to make it back in a while. Hopefully, sooner than later though (fingers and toes crossed). We’ve been missing Hawaii a great deal lately, so I’ve been making this Hawaiian lunch plate-inspired meal to help us feel a little more connected to the islands. A Hawaiian lunch plate typically has a scoop of rice, a scoop of sweet and tangy macaroni salad, a protein of some kind (like spam or teriyaki chicken) and a side of veggies. El Hub grew up eating them, and I’m all about ’em now too. Granted, the plate lunches that I, an SF Bay Area girl, make here probably won’t be considered “authentic” (air quotes) by Hawaiian lunch plate culinary die-hard standards, my family really likes them. Q & A: Have You Ever Done Your Highlights Successfully at Home?

Girl…HELL, NO, and the funny thing is, I’ve tried quite a few times, but it turned out terrible EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. You might’ve thought I would’ve learned my lesson after the first attempt, but nope! I just kept coming back for more. I vividly remember using one of those boxed chunky highlight kits in the mid-’90s with my cousin…who wasn’t really my cousin. If you’re Filipino, you probably already assumed this because when someone is referred to as your “cousin,” you don’t even have to be marginally related to them. As long as your moms or dads knew each other even tangentially, then they were immediately dubbed “cousins.” But I digress! This girl (my cousin who wasn’t really my cousin) and I both had jet black hair, and we decided it was a good idea to use a highlighting boxed kit made for blondes (yes, you read that correctly). One of us had heard from a friend of a friend that if you wanted black hair to lighten, you had to use what the blonde gals used. The kit came with a plastic cap, which you placed on top of your hair. Continue reading "Q & A: Have You Ever Done Your Highlights Successfully at Home?" on Makeup and Beauty Blog.

Checking In: A Chanel Blush Brush Haunting, and a Jewel-Toned FOTD With Purple Lids!

I will totally get to these purple lids in a second (BECAUSE PURPLE), but first, can we pleeeeease talk about the latest mystery to unfold on this end of the keyboard — a mystery also known as “The Haunting of Casa MBB”? Don’t worry, there’s nothing terribly sinister afoot (I’m not splashing buckets of holy water on things left and right, in case you’re wondering!). I’ve been gently “haunted” for the past few weeks by my favorite Chanel blush brush, which has been disappearing and reappearing all over the house in the most random places. I’ve found it on my bed, in the hallway, on the middle of the stairs, on the kitchen floor. Last week I found it smack dab in the middle of living room, just sitting there on the carpet right in front of the couch. Hmm… 🤔 I just assumed that Connor had grabbed it and played with it and forgot to put it back, but when I asked her about it later she said, “No, mama, I have my own brushes.” (Hahaha! She totally does!) Now, this brush just so happens to be one of my favorite blush brushes because it’s super soft, and the brush head fits perfectly on top of the apples of my cheeks and underneath the hollow of my cheekbones, so I can use it for blush and bronzer. Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 648

🌻 1. Describe yourself in a hash tag. I mean, where do I even begin? Right now I’m… #toughbuthellatired #stillhangingintherebutjustbarely #kindaoverit 2. One ingredient you put in almost everything? To mis-quote Queen Bey, “If you liked it then you should’ve put some parmesan on it.” 3. Window or aisle seat? I’ll take the aisle seat please, especially if the person sitting next to me is a stranger (I don’t like feeling too boxed in). But if it’s me and El Hub and Connor, then I’m cool with the window. 4. Favorite place to view art? The Musée d’Orsay in Paris, because the light inside is otherworldly. I’ve only been there once, but that’s all I needed to fall in love! Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 631

Of all the things Tabs was, he was definitely not a minimalist. He’d go big on every occasion, but especially Halloween, and the day after his epic Halloween blowouts I would spend the day drinking green juices and detoxing while he would indulge in even more excess. I’m talking smoked fish flown in from Nova Scotia and caviar, and even though I would insist on eating a salad, I would find boxes upon boxes of Snickers all over the house. If there were such a thing as an anti-“less is more,” it would have been him. Yesterday I briefly wondered if he was doing it up at the Rainbow Bridge. I wonder what his costume was this year… I don’t know, I can see him being a golden mermaid. I offered to throw Rosie a Halloween party multiple times, but she straight-up refused. She just wanted to stay home and quietly study chess. She just finished watching Queen’s Gambit, and now she wants to be a Grandmaster of cat chess. Saturday Surfing, Oct. 31, 2020! Happy Halloween!

Good morning and Happy Halloween from this panda. (Yes, my affinity for smokey eyes was the driving factor for this costume.) We’re just about to head to the pumpkin patch I mentioned up in Petaluma, but before we go, I have to tell you about a great show I stumbled on this week called Women of Impact. You gotta watch this episode with Evy Poumpouras. She’s an author and former Secret Service Agent (she’s protected three presidents!), and she received the U.S. Secret Service Valor Award for her heroism on 9/11. IT’S SO GOOD! One of the things Evy talks about in the episode is the communication skills she used on the job and how to develop them in practical ways for everyday life. I’ve been thinking a lot about the techniques in the video… I’ve tried them in a few of my interactions with people this week, and by gosh! — it definitely got me thinking about the different ways we connect with people. Last night I used a few of the tips Evy mentions while I was getting Connor ready for bed. Continue reading "Saturday Surfing, Oct. 31, 2020! Happy Halloween!" on Makeup and Beauty Blog.

An Autumnal FOTD With Orange, Warm Brown, Red and Copper (Mostly MAC Makeup)

If you require makeup inspiration, might I suggest looking at your doorway? Wait — hear me out. That’s where I’ve been finding “inspo” for looks all week long. First, Samantha the ghost bride was my muse. Now it’s the fall leaf garland that hangs on my doorway. I wore this subtle smokey eye with a warm orangey reddish brown lip to preschool pickup yesterday (I took the lipstick off before I put on my mask though) because I was feelin’ fall. The leaves are starting to fall in my neighborhood, and although it’s been climbing into the 70s for a few days, there’s a chill in the air first thing in the morning. Been thinking a lot about ’90s makeup and so I went with a subtle version of a ’90s-style unblended lip liner in this by pairing a dark burgundy liner with matte orangey reddish brown lipstick. I wanted the liner to be present but not overly obvious… You can kinda see it from some angles more than others, but it’s there! By the way, this lipstick, MAC Marrakesh, is one of those orangey reddish brown that deserves more love! Urban Decay Empire Eyeliner Is an Enchanting Jewel-Toned Gem

If you like the KAPOW! of black eyeliner but usually gravitate toward subtler shades like charcoal gray and brown, first of all, HELLO, ARE WE MAKEUP TWINS? Second, check out Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in Empire ($22), a jeweled eggplant purple. Allegedly, it is not magical…but I’m not so sure about that. Whenever I want some serious smoke, Empire softens into a hazy, gorgeous gradient…that’s also smudge-proof when it sets and stays put on lash and water lines. You can also use the super-smooth formula to draw razor-sharp wings or trace your lash lines with skinny-mini streaks. Depending on the lighting, sometimes it looks matte, and sometimes there’s a hint of shimmer. Magic, I tell ya! Empire is a permanent fixture in UD’s lineup. Could it be your new favorite eyeliner for fall? 🤔 Ballerina daughters Because Rosie is my youngest child. 😊 Anyway, Connor takes a live Zoom ballet class on Wednesdays, and apparently Rosie has decided she’s a ballerina too. She parks her torbie booty in the middle of the floor and watches Connor jump over her and twirl around. A Ghost Bride Vibe: Sooty Smokey Lids With Matte Black Lips

Is this look wearable? I guess it depends on who you’re talking to. If you’re chatting with El Hub, he’d probably say, “Um, not really,” and he would encourage you to *not* wear this sooty smokey purplish blue smokey eye to pick up a small child at her preschool. (Side note: I seriously considered it, but then I chickened out at the last minute, and now I deeply regret not cementing my legacy as the crazy-@ss mom who showed up at pickup in black lipstick.) If you ask Samantha, though — she’s the Halloween ghost who haunts my doorway — she would first say, “B*tch stole me look!” LOL. Then she’d she’d say, “One hundred percent, YES, channel your inner goth Billy Idol White Wedding bride.” This is my “take two” at Samantha-inspired makeup! I wanted to push it a little further this time and tried to go more “edgy,” as opposed to wearable, but ultimately I think it ended up looking kinda casual cool, and yes, totally wearable. If we were back in the ’90s when I went through my (very brief) baby goth phase, I would’ve legit worn these lips and eyes everywhere. Product Spotlight: You’ll Be Drawn to Maybelline Color Strike Cream-to-Powder Shadow Pens If You Love One-And-Done Eye Makeup

Your amusing factoid of the day! The part of a pen responsible for the click-click-clickity sound is called “a thrust device.” 🖊️ You’re welcome! 😁 There’s no thrust device in these new $7 Maybelline Color Strike Cream-to-Shadow Pens, and aside from their cylindrical packaging, they aren’t very much like pens at all… When you twist them open, there’s a sponge tip inside, which is basically a fairly traditional preloaded eyeshadow applicator. In fact, there isn’t a felt tip or a ball-point pen applicator or a thrust device anywhere in sight. Semantics, schemantics. These cream shadows are great for a single, purposefully messy sweep of color on the lids because they’re only moderately pigmented, so they’re perfect for washes of quick, easy color. The formula is on the thinner side, but I wouldn’t call it watery. It’s almost like someone melted a MAC Paint Pot and thinned it out a bit. It’s slick and slippery when it moves across your skin, and it takes some time to set, so you have a good 10-15 minutes to blend. I would caution against using too many “pens” (“air quotes”) on your eyes in one sitting, though, because there seems to be a tipping point after which too much shadow results in the colors mushing into a muddy mess. Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 651

🌻 1. Last person you held hands with? The Coywolf, while walking up the stairs. 2. Yoga or Baby Yoda? Baby Yoda in a heartbeat! 3. Do you ever get scared in the middle of the night? Oh, hell yeah. Most of the time it’s something silly and irrational, like wondering if I’ll see the Bloody Mary ghost in the mirror when I go the bathroom in the middle of the night. 😨 But sometimes it’s real-deal fear rooted in worry about finances, the future, our health… All those big scary things that keep adults up at night. 4. Did you grow up playing video games? I did! 🕹️ We had an Atari AND a Nintendo in our house, and my brother and I played games together (Super Mario Brothers was our favorite), but we weren’t playing 24/7. Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 632

I did not want to get out of bed this morning! It was cold! Well…cold for us. It was about 50 outside this morning, but Rosie still wanted to go for her walk, just like Tabs would have. He was like the Post Office when it came to the weather. Neither rain nor sleet nor snow could stop him from going on Sunday patrol. Yup, he took cat corporate security of Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC very seriously. The chill is here! Fall has officially arrived, which also means falling leaves to chase and windy weather fun. Some of Tabs’ favorite days were windy days in fall. It fired up his cat senses and boosted his energy to almost kitten levels. On windy days like today, Tabs was like his best cat self. He climbed trees, chased birds and regularly struck award-winning poses. And now I also know that Rosie loves fall as much as Tabs did. Rosie It totally caught me off guard, but she leapt almost 10 feet up the trunk of a big oak tree today…while on her leash! Saturday Surfing, Nov. 7, 2020

WOO-HOO! It’s the weekend, my friend. Greetings from a keyboard in Novato, California. It dips below 60 degrees here in Marin County now, which basically means that everyone is wearing 20 million layers of down, HA HA HA! Welcome to California. I hope you’re feeling well. I busted out my favorite cozy down vest yesterday, and look what I found in the pocket… Apparently, I put one of Connor’s newborn socks in the pocket for some reason years ago, and it’s been there ever since. Now I can’t bear to take it out, so I’ve actually washed it with the vest several times. 🤣 Anywho, you know what I realized recently? We’ve been asking a lot of our ears in 2020. Between the masks and the glasses and the earrings, I feel like there’s just one too many things going on, and that’s in addition to, you know, using my ears for their intended purpose (i.e. listening). Ears are the unsung heroes of 2020! 👂 On that note, here’s today’s reading… Just in case you were on the market for a lipstick gun that was previously used by a spy… 🕵️‍♀️ WHAT THE WHAT!? This or That: Mascara Edition

How to play Pick one or the other for each of the questions below, and copy/paste your answers in the comments. Can’t wait to see your picks! Mine are listed below. 💋 Copy and paste Would you rather have a mascara that gives you massive length or intense thickness? Lash primer: a must-have or an unnecessary step? Mascara on lower lashes: love it or leave it? Brown mascara or black mascara? Purple mascara or blue mascara? Department store or drugstore mascara? Skinny wand or oversized wand? Tapered wand or curved wand? Do you prefer mascaras with a natural effect or dramatic effect? Soft or stiff lashes? Tubing mascara or fiber mascara? Clear mascara: love it or leave it? Would you rather have a mascara that gives you massive length or intense thickness? Don’t laugh but I spent an inordinate amount of time contemplating this. One the one hand, length is great because I feel like it mimics the look of falsies, but thickness offers a lot of bang for your buck visually.
